Phonic Books was founded by dyslexia-trained reading specialists. While tutoring at a dyslexia center, these educators didn’t have the resources needed for students to apply the phonics they had learned to their reading practice, so they began to write their own decodable books. They quickly realized there was a need for decodable books that were both structured and engaging, especially for older readers who had experienced reading failure and loss of self-esteem. From their teaching experience, it was clear that children learn at different rates and that some need more practice than others. Therefore, they made the decision to:
- Publish multiple books for children of different reading abilities who need extra support.
- Publish a range of books for older learners who are still in the early stages of their reading.
- Publish multiple series in different genres to engage, enthuse, and motivate struggling readers, while still providing the scope and sequence scaffolding necessary to progress.
- Publish inclusive books so all children learning to read could relate to the characters and stories.
Today, in tandem with DK, Phonic Books publishes exciting, engaging, motivating, and inclusive truly decodable books for all children learning to read: from children in mainstream classrooms to children learning in special educational settings. Across fiction and nonfiction genres, we aim to publish exciting books that students will want to read, will consolidate their decoding skills, and develop a lifelong love of reading.
