Reading with fluency and comprehension is the goal of all reading instruction. To become fluent, students must develop word recognition–the ability to recognize words with accuracy and automaticity. The question is, how do students develop accuracy and automaticity? The answer involves a combination of knowing what to teach, how to teach it, and which tools to use. At the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Learn that phonics instruction begins at the sub-word level and progresses through the word, phrase, sentence, and text level.
- Understand and apply the main tenets of explicit, systematic instruction.
- Implement instructional routines focused on building word reading accuracy and automaticity.
- Develop strategies for fluency instruction using decodable texts.
- Examine small group lessons which demonstrate the use of decodable books for teaching phonics.
If you teach beginning reading, or support older struggling readers, this work shop is for YOU!
